E-learning training technology for companies
E-learning is being used today by more and more companies that aim to optimize their training processes.
The implementation of a suitable system into the company ensures the development of the vast possibilities of e-learning and brings numerous benefits. However, in order for the effects of the implementation to be as good as possible, we must ensure that the technical solutions we use are tailored to our expectations.
One related issue is the choice of the standard in which our training courses will be created. Many organizations still choose to create training using the SCORM module.
Despite the passage of many years since its inception, does this solution still achieve all of the company's goals? To answer this question, we need to look at the specifics of the SCORM standard, discuss its advantages and limitations, and compare it with other solutions currently in use.
The SCORM standard - does it still work?
SCORM is an e-training standard that was created and popularized in the early 21st century. To this day, it still fulfills the task set before its creators - because it allows the creation of training courses that can be supported by almost any LMS platform.
SCORM training courses are now mainly created using special tools that allow easy development of the material. Finished SCROM modules are saved in special packages, which can then be imported by the LMS.
Subsequent versions of the SCORM standard introduced some modifications and allowed to achieve better e-learning results.
However, only some of them are still supported by most e-learning platforms. We leaned over the capabilities of the different versions and the process of creating training courses in our previous article What is SCORM and how to use it.
Advantages of training in the SCORM standard
The SCORM standard gained its popularity, which it still enjoys today, for good reason. This is because it addresses many of the most important needs of organizations deciding to implement e-learning. What specific advantages have contributed to the success of the SCORM standard?
The most important feature of the SCORM standard, which is the basis of its popularity, is certainly its versatility. Almost every good LMS, such as Ideo e-learning, for example, now provides compatibility with this format. Creating or ordering SCORM training courses is therefore a guarantee that the material will be supported without any problems by the platform you are currently using.
However, this is not the end of the advantages that come from the universality of the SCORM standard. The interoperability we have discussed will also prove extremely important when we want to change the platform used in the company.
For example, if we decide to implement the Ideo e-learning system in place of the currently used SCORM-compliant software, the whole process will be carried out quickly and seamlessly - the materials created earlier will be imported in no time, and the trainees will be able to successfully continue learning.
However, versatility is not the only advantage that has contributed to the popularity of the SCORM standard. This is because the solution also provides some possibilities for creating interactive elements, such as tests, for example.
In turn, as the data shows, the interactivity in question is one of the factors influencing the involvement of participants, and thus the effectiveness of e-learning courses. The SCORM standard also allows communication with the LMS, thanks to which we are able to collect information on the progress of trainees.
We can track not only whether employees passed a module, but also what part of the material they had the most trouble with and what results they achieved for specific modules. The SCORM standard thus provides a solution tailored to the needs of many modern companies. But does it actually fully meet all of an organization's expectations, and does it maximize the effectiveness of e-learning?
SCORM standard - difficulties and limitations
When discussing the capabilities of the SCORM standard, it is impossible to ignore the fact that the solution was developed more than 20 years ago. Thus, at the time of developing both the standard itself and the subsequent versions still in use today, the developers could not take into account the needs and habits of the modern audience, such as, for example, the desire to learn using a smartphone.
SCORM training courses, although they can be executed on mobile devices, have certain limitations through which providing the best user experience is not possible in some cases. Today's e-training users also have other requirements for training interactivity and the presence of multimedia. This makes it clear that tests and exams alone may no longer be enough to keep the trainees' attention.
A limitation associated with SCORM packages is also the difficulty of modifying the materials placed on the platform. Implementing a system such as Ideo e-learning, which also offers a training wizard, can help solve this and other problems.
What are e-learning training wizards?
An e-learning wizard, which allows you to create e-learning courses, is an easy-to-use tool that allows you to develop or improve the material yourself. Thus, the person creating a given module is able to adjust its format or length accordingly. They can also add multimedia to the training, such as photos or videos, and implement interactive elements that engage the user.
Benefits of using training wizards
E-learning platforms that offer a training wizard provide numerous facilities for organizations that choose to implement them. The main benefit of this solution is certainly that all modules can be developed independently by an employee with the appropriate background. Thus, in many situations it is not necessary to outsource the creation of training courses to external companies.
If, on the other hand, we already have previously developed modules, and we just want to improve their individual parts, the training creator offered by Ideo e-learning, among others, will allow us to easily modify the content. We will also be able to add appropriate multimedia and other elements to the imported material.
Good wizards will allow us to prepare an engaging and properly tailored training course for our employees. So does this mean that we should completely abandon ready-made SCORM packages and develop each module ourselves?
Advantages of SCORM and training wizards - can they be combined?
If we implement a universal and versatile platform such as Ideo e-learning, we won't have to choose between using ready-made, pre-created SCORM training courses and developing new material from scratch in a wizard.
This is because such a system will provide us with the ability to both import training materials of the indicated modules, as well as add multimedia materials to them, customize them according to the users' needs or supplement them with new lessons. In addition, it will be possible to easily arrange materials into training paths dedicated to specific positions, which will allow us to acquire knowledge in the right order.
The right software will help us take advantage of the benefits of the universality of the SCORM standard and give us the ability to easily adapt the content to the needs of the modern training user. Investing in a system such as Ideo e-learning will therefore bring real benefits to the company and allow it to optimize the process of creating, monitoring and implementing e-training.
